What is Biv Tech?
Bivouac = Campsite. This exercise is design to be an introduction FTX for all new cadets, to teach the fundamental knowledge and techniques of outdoor living.
What is Solo?
Every year in spring, few cadets are selected to complete the Solo Survival Challenge, where the cadets need to self sustain for 24 hours under officers’ supervision. On this Solo Prep weekend, cadets are taught and assessed on using the resources in their surroundings to built a shelter, start and maintain a fire, prepare a signal fire, collect safe drinking water and/or snare to capture “food”. Cadets will also be instructed on how to build a survival kits, what are the enemies of survival, how to safely handle tools.
*From this exercise, based on performance, only 5-6 cadets will be selected to complete the Solo Survival Challenge.
Other Tips & Suggestions
- The weather forecast in the area will range between -10 to 0 *C (but keep in mind we are in the woods, and the weather can change quickly).
- Follow the suggested kit list, and adjust accordingly to weather. Bring a few extra pairs of wool socks. DON'T forget your toque, gloves, scarve (spare set if you have them).
- EAT before you come on Friday night.
- Bring a water bottle!! A mug for hot chocolate!!
- Bring clothing that you can put on/take off in LAYERS.
- Our issued jacket is NOT appropriate for in the field, so bring your own winter jacket. Also a pair spare shoes (winter boots).
